North Star Art Club: Where Creativity & Community Shine

A mindful and safe space for kids and teens to be themselves while exploring and creating art

By Maria Grams, Macaroni KID Publisher July 18, 2024

Is your child interested in art, but you don’t know where to start? Maybe you find yourself searching for high-quality arts programming, but everything seems too far out of reach. The founder of North Star Art Club, Richelle Norton, was in a similar situation, trying to find high-quality art programming for her budding-artist daughter, so she decided to create her own! We are so excited to announce the opening of North Star Art Club, an out-of-this-world addition to the heart of 50th and France in Edina! This brand-new art space is designed to be a safe and creative space for kids to let their creativity and their authentic selves shine. Designed for children and teens, ages 8 and up, the arts programming works to enrich students’ art interests, grow creativity, build problem-solving skills, and develop artistic skills and techniques through artist-led instruction and open-studio exploration experiences.

Richelle is a licensed art teacher, former public school educator, and community member.  She is passionate about children and teens having a safe space where they can go to be creative, express themselves, and learn, explore, and expand on their artistic talents.  She also believes in the profound positive impact of art on mental health for all people and provides art camp opportunities such as Art and Mindfulness to promote stress-relieving and mindful art strategies that learners can take with them into everyday life. She also believes that art making develops curiosity, empathy, creative problem-solving, persistence, and grit.

Growing up Richelle's mom always allowed creative space, but was never stressed out by a mess and was her “North Star” for providing many and varied opportunities for visual arts and what would now be STEAM experiences. The North Star Art Club is inspired by Richelle's mom, Jean, and is a space for students in Minneapolis to be creative without worrying about making a mess. She hopes that this club helps students to reflect on their own experiences and values, cultivate relationships, break through perfectionist tendencies, and express their emotions.

The sky's the limit with the offerings that North Star Art Club provides! From weekly camps to drop-in classes, there is something for everyone to enjoy. When school resumes, after-school art clubs will also be on the calendar, for students to come to unwind, create, and build community. North Star Art Club offers a membership option for avid art-goers and also even offers Spanish tutoring.  For Spanish tutoring, inquire at richelle@northstarartclub.com. Celebrate or host your private event at North Star Art Club and your guests will be filled with starry-eyed wonder and joy.
